Risk Assessments Cybersecurity – Georgia

Many Atlanta and Georgia businesses face various challenges when managing cybersecurity programs. This includes ever-evolving threats, human errors, misconfigurations, poor maintenance, and a lack of a formal cybersecurity plan. An organization is exposed to reputational damage, intellectual property theft, stolen data, and financial loss without adequate and updated protections. In fact, according to IBM’s Cost of a Data Breach Study, the average breach cost in 2023 was $4.5M. This figure reflects the loss potential and the importance of a comprehensive cybersecurity program.

The first step in evaluating your program is to conduct a cybersecurity risk assessment. It is designed to identify and test assets that could be impacted by an attack, including hardware, systems, customer/patient data, and intellectual property. It also looks for vulnerabilities due to poor cyber hygiene, cloud vulnerabilities, poor data management, and inadequate post-attack procedures. The resulting report provides insight into how to increase overall effectiveness.

Recent Atlanta Cybersecurity Incidents

Atlanta has faced several significant cybersecurity incidents in recent years, prominently featuring the 2018 ransomware attack. In March 2018, the city’s government systems were targeted by the SamSam ransomware, which encrypted numerous systems and demanded a ransom payment in Bitcoin. The attack severely disrupted city services, including court proceedings, bill payments, and police records, and it took several months and about $17 million to recover from the damage fully. Despite the demand for a ransom of $51,000, Atlanta chose not to pay, which extended the recovery period but aligned with the principle of not rewarding cybercriminals.

Additionally, in 2019, Georgia Tech experienced a data breach that exposed the personal information of 1.3 million individuals, highlighting vulnerabilities in the university’s cybersecurity measures. The attack on Piedmont Healthcare in 2020 also disrupted its operations significantly, forcing the provider to take systems offline and revert to manual processes.
