IRS Extends Tax Deadlines for Broward County Residents by Karen A. Lake, CPA

Posted on May 22, 2023 by Karen Lake

The IRS extended until August 15, 2023, various federal tax filing and payment deadlines for individuals and businesses impacted by recent storms, tornadoes and flooding in South Florida’s Broward County. This relief is available to individuals who reside or have a business in a federally declared disaster area or whose records necessary for filing tax returns during the postponement period are in the affected area.

The tax deadlines for which this filing extension applies include the filing of federal tax returns and payments of related tax that was originally due on April 18, 2023. Additional deadlines that fall under the extension include quarterly estimated tax payments, which are normally due on April 18 and June 15, and taxpayers’ 2022 contributions to IRAs and health savings accounts (HSAs).

For businesses, the filing extension applies to quarterly payroll and excise tax returns normally due on May 1 and July 31, 2023. In addition, penalties on payroll and excise tax deposits due on or after April 12 and before April 27, will be abated as long as taxpayers made their deposits by April 27, 2023.

The IRS automatically provides this relief to qualifying taxpayers with an IRS address of record located in the disaster area. Therefore, taxpayers do not need to contact the agency to get this relief. However, if an affected taxpayer receives a late filing or late payment penalty notice from the IRS that has an original or extended filing, payment or deposit due date falling within the postponement period, he or she should contact their tax accountant to have the penalty abated.
